Reprogramming a key fob or remote is not as difficult as many think. However, safety precautions must be taken before reprogramming any remote control. Doing so on your own can also be easy if you follow the correct steps and use the right tools for the job.

If you've lost your remote, have it replaced with an identical one, or want to change the access code to something more memorable, reprogramming is a straightforward process that can usually be completed in less than 10 minutes. This guide will show you how to reprogram your car key fob from start to finish with everything you need to know about safety precautions and what tools you'll need to get started today!

(Option 1 - Using a Key Programmer)

If you need to reprogram your key fob, there are a few things you'll need to do.

  1. First, you'll need to find a suitable key fob programming device.
  2. Next, you'll need to clear any existing codes from the key fob.
  3. Finally, you'll need to program the new code into the key fob. To find the right key fob programming device, you'll need to know the make and model of your car. Once you have that information, you can search for a key fob programming device compatible with your vehicle.

(Option 1 Using a Key Programmer) Things you'll need

Key Activation

1. First, simultaneously press the LOCK and PANIC buttons on the remote. The light under the PANIC button will illuminate and stay on.

2. Using your ACTIVATION CODE, enter the first digit using the LOCK button, the second digit using the PANIC button, and the third digit using the UNLOCK button.

3. Now, simultaneously press the LOCK and PANIC buttons on the remote.

Key Pairing

1. Find your vehicle’s make, model, and year in the Compatibility list. Turn the dial on the EZ Installer to the position listed for your vehicle’s make, model, and year. Enter the vehicle and ensure all doors are closed.

2. Begin with the vehicle in PARK and the engine OFF. Turn hazard lights ON.

3. Insert the original key into the ignition and start the vehicle. Remove the security label from the EZ Installer and insert it firmly into the onboard diagnostic (OBD) port located under the dash.

4. Wait up to 8 seconds and listen for 3 quick beeps from the EZ Installer. Turn the ignition off and remove the key.

5. To continue, press and release the EZ Installer button. Wait up to 8 seconds and listen for 3 quick beeps from the EZ Installer.

6. Turn the ignition off and remove the key. To continue, press and release the EZ Installer button.

7. The EZ Installer will chime when the pairing is complete. Unplug the EZ Installer. If the EZ Installer is left in the OBD port for more than 5 minutes, an alarm will sound, reminding you to remove it.

Reprogramming Safety Tips

  • Ensure your car is in park or neutral before attempting to reprogram your key fob to prevent serious accidents. This will help you avoid accidents caused by accidentally pressing a button while your car is in gear.
  • Turn off your car's engine. You don't want any voltage running through the car while reprogramming the key fob. If a key fob is programmed while the engine is on, the wrong code could be sent the next time you turn the engine off and then on again, which could cause damage to your car.

(Option 2) How to Reprogram a Key Fob without a Key Programmer

  1. Enter your vehicle with your fob and ignition keys. Ensure all doors are closed
  2. Put your car into ignition mode (without starting the engine) This is usually called the "ON" mode. If your car is push start, kindly press the button once without holding it down. Otherwise, use your ignition key and turn it only "ONCE" without starting your car.
  3. While your car is in this mode, press the "LOCK" button on your fob key. Ensure to aim the key under the steering wheel.
  4. Then, turn the ignition off.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 two to three more times.
  6. You'll hear a "Clicking" sound when you put your car in ignition mode. This now means you are in programming mode.
  7. Now, press the "Lock" button on your fob key, then turn off the ignition to finalize the reprogramming.

Conclusion

This guide is straightforward and takes little time to complete; by following it, you should be able to reprogram your key fob in no time.
